I’m doing something a little different on the blog, starting today until December 18; instead of the 12 days of Christmas, I’m doing the 5 days of local. One of the purposes of this blog, was to provide another platform to support local companies across Canada. I’ve always been a huge supporter of local companies, and for the first day I’m bringing you the Newfoundland Chocolate Company.

I was invited to take a tour of the nationally known chocolate companies main production area, where this time of year is where you’ll find a large selection of items getting ready to be gifted to loved ones who live away across the country, or in stockings to be found on Christmas morning.

The most apparent theme about the company was repeated in every part of it’s process from idea creation to store front; don’t make things complicated, make it a simple process. When starting the company, co-founder Brent Smith recalled to me that all they wanted was just a good chocolate with simple ingredients that represented Newfoundland, and they wanted to get it right and be an ambassador for Newfoundland since the people of Newfoundland are very proud of where they come from.
Every chocolate that is made and wrapped is all hand done in their main location on water street in downtown St.John’s. They wanted to keep the old tradition alive in chocolate making, by ensuring every detail was done by hand to further inject their passion into the process.

One of the things I love the most about the Newfoundland culture, is the folklore and stories that make up every generation. The Newfoundland Chocolate Company wanted to showcase their passion for their chocolate through the passion that Newfoundland has for story telling. In each box, bar, and piece of packaging you’ll find a piece of Newfoundland.
From our world famous sayings scribed onto easy to pick up bars, seasonal products detailing our seasonal traditions, to every box including names and a map of where the chocolate designs originated from. You’ll fall in love not only with their packaging, but with their passion that can be seen in every detail of operation.

You can visit their website, or check out their Facebook to learn more about the company and pick up a box or two of their famous chocolates. Every time I visit, I make it a point to pick up something so I can take a little piece of home back with me to Toronto. Until Friday, I’ve linked some of my favourite products.
