The Holiday season and everything that comes before and after it, can take it’s toll. As a student, blogger, and everything in between it’s hard to find balance amongst the chaos and take time for yourself. Today, I’m sharing tips on how to take care of yourself this Holiday season.
The end of the year and the holiday season can bring a lot of emotional, mental and physical drawbacks; there’s final exams, pressure to meet year end goals, getting the perfect gift, and going to events you’re not comfortable with.
You’re allowed to say no.
The holidays are full of events, from family gatherings to work parties, and if you’re not comfortable going to them or aren’t feeling up to it then you can say no. I know it’s easier said than done, and I’m not saying to skip all of them, but taking time out for yourself is one of the best things you can do and if people react in a negative way then that is their problem and not yours- you can’t help how others react, but you can control how you react.
Take some time for yourself, even if it’s small.
One of my favourite things to do, is to stop and take everything in. Doing something small that can give you a sense of clarity and focus again can make your to do list easier to manage. Take some time out by using a face mask, reading a new book, drinking your favourite cup of something hot- anything that can recharge and inspire you again. I always have a notebook with me and I like to revisit it and browse Pinterest while drinking some coffee if I need to get away for a couple of minutes; it reignites my inspiration and gives me new ideas in the process.
Get some fresh air & Exercise
This tip might seem obvious, but everyone says this for a reason. This time of year, whether you have exams, deadlines, or a lot of shopping to do, exercise and some fresh air will ease any anxiety you have and make everything bearable. I love dancing (I eat, sleep and breathe it) and that always makes me feel better- your mind will be clearer, refreshed, and focused when you move a little. Making healthy habits will reflect on your personality, and those around you will take notice and appreciate the efforts you’re taking to better yourself.
Let go & see the silver lining
I’m guilty of wanting everything to be perfect- the perfect gift, perfect outfit, and for everything to go smoothly. As much as I try for these things to happen, it never does. Everyone values this time of year because we look forward to it all year and want it to be the best as possible. If you’re someone like me, the best thing you can do to enjoy this time of year instead of letting it get to you, is to just let it go. There are some things you can’t change, and if you know you’re doing the best you can and putting in as much effort as you can, that’s all you and anyone can ask for.
Go off the grid for an afternoon
We look at screens everyday in our professional and personal lives and the light that comes from the screens can do more harm than good if you’re constantly looking at it. It’s hard to do today, but just for an afternoon go off the grid and give your time to others. Generosity and your time are two of the biggest things you can offer, and it’ll make you feel amazing in the process. It’ll remind you of all the amazing things in your life, and remind you that things really aren’t that complicated after all.
The biggest thing I want you to take away from this post, is to do something for yourself in the midst of doing things for other people. If that means leaving a party for some extra Z’s, saving some treats that are just for you, and putting an effort into healthy habits then do it. Your loved ones and others around you, will notice that you’re a healthier and happier person because of it.
